So here it is – my final day as LGBTQ+ Society President. I’ve been on the committee for 1,049 days, having stood for the role of Ordinary Member at an EGM on the 21st November 2018. At the AGM in 2019 I got elected President and have been doing that role for just over two years. Earlier this year I got elected for a third term as society president whilst I commenced up my fourth year at the university – but sometimes life takes you in unexpected directions, and today I find myself stepping aside so that a new person can lead the society for the remainder of this academic year.

I look back my time on committee and a few big things jump out at me. From changing the name of and logo of the society to be more inclusive, running the first ever on-campus pride event, getting us into the parade at Southampton Pride, renaming a building because it was named after a homophobic dictator who once gave the university a lot of money… there are loads of milestones to celebrate. The campaign for gender neutral toilets is ongoing but we’re already miles ahead of where we started, and there are so many initiatives that we’ve kicked off that are still going on to make change and create good for LGBTQ+ students from all walks of life here at the University of Southampton.
But while these milestones are great, I think it’s the small things that I’ll miss the most. Committee meetings where we all love and support one another, questionable nights out with 9am lectures the next morning, and all those times we’ve sat at Trago lounge just hanging out in the presence of other queer folk – being part of this society has made a measurable difference to my confidence, my self-acceptance, and my pride. I hope to carry that spirit with me, and I hope that spirit continues to live on in all that you do as a society in my absence.
